Jake Brigance is back! The hero of A Time to Kill, one of the most popular novels of our time, returns in a courtroom drama that The New York Times says is "riveting" and "suspenseful."

Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

In what may be the most personal and accomplished legal thriller of John Grisham’s storied career, we deepen our acquaintance with the iconic Southern town of Clanton and the vivid cast of characters that so many readers know and cherish. The result is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and—most of all—heart.

Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham’s most powerful courtroom drama yet.

There is a time to kill and a time for justice. Now comes A Time for Mercy.

Good book

The book kept me interested until the end. The ending was anticipated. I judge a book is good when after done reading, I wonder what happened next to the characters. I wonder happening to these characters.

edowe02

Absolutely a great read.

A fantastic read. Many of Grisham’s books are great and keep you on edge throughout. This did no disappoint. Anxiously awaiting the next publishing.

Magick666

Mercy Denied

Not Grisham's best. Started hot, but died in a pool of slow courtroom procedure. Actual court was riveting but was way at the end and needs a sequel to complete the story arc.

Rhinosandy III

A great read.

Always a great story teller.

Time for mercy

Grisham is a great wordsmith and story teller but the ending was a dud. Wrap it up. Left me flat.

A time for mercy

Very disappointing. I made it through 120 pages only due to my reluctance to admit I had wasted $14.00. The characters, the setting and dialogue are all boring and bland. It gets some very favorable reviews on here. I assume the writing must improve later on , but I’m not willing to stick it out. After being disappointed a couple of times by Grisham’s later works, I’m beginning to believe that his initial books were ghost written instead of the other way around.

This was an outstanding novel and I could hardly keep myself away from it. I felt a personal connection to the characters in the book and the range of emotion extending across bursting in laughter to crying tears. Wonderful book. I hope a movie comes from it.

A good wrap to the series. Small towns and small counties can only be so convincing. That is how many dramas can occur there?

Give Me More Jake

The only thing I didn’t like about this book was that it ended. My favorite Grisham book has always been A Time to Kill, so I was thrilled to discover Sycamore Row. And by the time I finished A Time for Mercy, my thirst for more Jake reached an all time high. I sincerely hope Grisham continues to share these characters and location with us.... My only concern is that he needs to pick up the pace! I’m not getting any younger.

Grisham is a great story teller. While this book lacked thes. Suspense of the Firm it read well.As a lawyer who has tried cased I was impressed with the authenticity. I did have one question: Keira’s baby was the sole heir toKofer’s assets. Whatever else he had the house was worth quite a bit( relatively speaking). Why not have the adopting parents appointed as guardians and make the money available for her later on in life. The adoption would not cut off the child’s right to inherit. I am sure Grisham was aware of this but wonder why he chose to ignore it. Better that the Money benefited the child than his redneck family. John Farrsuto

Not his greatest

John Grisham is a great writer. This book leaves so many situations up in the air that , unlike most of his books, it seems unfinished. I, for one, would hope this is the end of the Jake Brigance, saga. They have gotten repetitive almost to the point of being boring. But of course, like most of you, I will be among the first in line to read Mr. Grisham’s next offering.

Good Read, but went off trail at times

I didn’t like it, I LOVED IT! Did not like the occasional jumping to other seemingly less relevant cases, but that is a miner complaint on a good book

SLP-NV

A great read

A great read but a perfectly predictable ending. Much more character development and detail into the topic of housing, food insecurity along with poverty and abuse then I expected. A timely novel as many are facing these challenges.

TammyTroDen

Best in years...

Loved nearly everything about this book: Jake is back, more of Carla, a new brilliant young Black woman is mentored by Jake; Harry Rex and Lucian return; and Noose reigns over the circuit. A tender and heartbreaking beginning to what is sure to be another book. His best in several years.

JPB 9871

A Time For Mercy

Took a bit to get into. Probably a bit long but generally pretty good.

Doc Missy

Amazing

Just like a fine wine, you want to savor every last page in this book. Every character becomes personal and familiar. I have read every JG book and he never disappoints. Unlike other writers who seem to have sold out to make a dollar, Grisham seems to write for the pleasure of his audience. Can’t wait till the next one.

19ron57

Disappointing

It was a good read until the end. Very disappointing. I was waiting for a resolution or a twist or a revelation. Anything. It’s like he had no interest in making a compelling ending. He just wrapped up loose ends with expected bland outcomes.

MikePlacid

The worst Grisham book so far

The action stops soon after the beginning. It resumes at the trial and then stops again. The characters are not living their lives, they are acting good. Even bad people are acting good. You’ll get more life, drama and the fight between good and evil - up to the Supreme Court! - in some documentary books, like License to Lie by Sidney Powell. How could the good writer have written a book that is duller than real life?

Peter 14

No Mercy

Well told story with interesting characters. The ending was soft...

Igamitzu

A Time For Mercy

So promising and yet so disappointing, specially the ending, almost like Grisham was in a hurry to finish. Yes, it's nice that Jake and Carla adopted Kiera's son and that Hanna has a baby brother but really, is that what this story is about???

A Time For Mercy

So promising and yet so disappointing, specially the ending, almost like Grisham was in a hurry to finish. Yes, it's nice that Jake and Carla adopted Kiera's son and that Hanna has a baby brother but really, is that what this story is about???

Perfect Sequel

“A Time to Kill” is one of my favorite John Grisham books, with a controversial crime and outcome. Jake Brigance finds himself in another impossible situation, and like the true professional he is, handles it brilliantly.

Good Read, but went off trail at times

I didn’t like it, I LOVED IT! Did not like the occasional jumping to other seemingly less relevant cases, but that is a miner complaint on a good book

A great read

A great read but a perfectly predictable ending. Much more character development and detail into the topic of housing, food insecurity along with poverty and abuse then I expected. A timely novel as many are facing these challenges.

Peter 14

No Mercy

A Time For Mercy

So promising and yet so disappointing, specially the ending, almost like Grisham was in a hurry to finish. Yes, it's nice that Jake and Carla adopted Kiera's son and that Hanna has a baby brother but really, is that what this story is about???

Mercy Denied

Not Grisham's best. Started hot, but died in a pool of slow courtroom procedure. Actual court was riveting but was way at the end and needs a sequel to complete the story arc.

Here’s a hopeful Win for Jake!

Thanks for the beautiful story about the fragility of life

Good read

The story line is interesting and complex, with lots of detail. However, the ending was anticlimactic. Thus, the lower rating.

A time for mercy

Terrible book....I miss the old John Grisham. This just seemed to be thrown together.....maybe he needed a new yacht.

The Ending is Not Complete

Love Jake Brigance and the cast of characters but this story does not have a conclusive ending.

Quick read

Great read! Not the ending I expected or hoped for, but fun read nonetheless

Once Again

John, once again, has written a book that kept me up at night and waking up early to find out what is next. The flow is just impeccable to me the reader. It is like he is sitting across the table reading his book to me.

Exceptional and intriguing!

A bit of a yawn

Not quite any excitement. I could’ve gone without reading. The end gave nothing.

Good read

It’s as if John Grisham is back! Yea!

Couldn’t put it down

Great read as are all of Grisham’s books! More of the Jake Brigance series please!

“Too short!”

As with any writings I’ve loved reading, thus one was too short! Will miss the characters!

I enjoyed reading a time for mercy. I have read most of Gresham’s books, practically all of them. I found this to be well written fast-paced and quite enjoyable

Mercy

Another great Grisham book. Read a Time to Kill many years ago. Will definitely go back and reread.

Excellent

Jake Brigance is back. I loved this story. Great read!!

GLP2020!

Great book2020

One of the best John Grisham books I’ve read in years.

Couldn’t put it down

Great read. Excellent storyline. Love the characters continuing to evolve.

The truth.

I loved the book and couldn’t put it down. I always love these characters and have read all of Grisham novels. All of his characters are alive and speaking the truth.

A Time For Mercy

Took a bit to get into. Probably a bit long but generally pretty good.

Disappointing

It was a good read until the end. Very disappointing. I was waiting for a resolution or a twist or a revelation. Anything. It’s like he had no interest in making a compelling ending. He just wrapped up loose ends with expected bland outcomes.

No Mercy

Well told story with interesting characters. The ending was soft...

A Time For Mercy

So promising and yet so disappointing, specially the ending, almost like Grisham was in a hurry to finish. Yes, it's nice that Jake and Carla adopted Kiera's son and that Hanna has a baby brother but really, is that what this story is about???
